FATS!: A rollicking revue of the music of Thomas “Fats” Waller
Music Doing Good core artist, Aisha Ussery Adams, heads up a cast of talented vocalists featuring fellow core artist and pianist Phillip Hall, to create a montage of Waller’s hits and lesser-known (but equally entertaining) songs! He was a master of stride piano and was an accomplished professional musician by the time he was fifteen. Fats’ first piano solos were recorded when he was only eighteen years old, which led to a career that spanned more than thirty years. From the naughty double-entendre laden, All That Meat and No Potatoes to a poignant rendition of Black and Blue, the depth of Waller’s acumen as a songwriter is keenly illustrated to the audience in this nostalgic performance. Tickets are $15.
Weds July 18, 2012; 7:30pm
Speakeasy - Songs from the Prohibition
Prohibition was supposed to usher in an era of sobriety and restraint. Instead, America’s noble experiment was submerged by the madcap wave of the Roaring 20s, when inventive recording artists on their way to fame unleashed spirited sounds that set the tone for the country. Check your Tommy gun at the door, grab a glass of moonshine and join Music Doing Good Director of Jazz Delfeayo Marsalis and his band of speakeasy all-stars for a night of bawdy musical decadence inspired by the prohibition era. After all, “It don’t mean a thing, if it ain’t got that swing….” Tickets are $20.
Wednesday, July 25, 2012; 7:30 pm
Sail Away – High C’s on the High Seas
Featuring the diverse talents of core artists Aisha Ussery Adams, Kenneth Gayle, Phillip Hall, Aaron Kaufman, Anita Kruse, David LaDuca, Rodney Waters, Tricia Fox and Ray Younkin, this event is sure to conjure up images of crashing waves, mermaids and the mysterious power of the deep blue sea. Along for the ride are special guests and fearless voyagers, Maine’s own Ron Bouffard and Dennis St. Pierre. Tickets are $15.
